Our Weekly Public Debates
Thursdays - 7:30pm
We run our Public Debates every academic week of the St Andrews Calendar, and Orientation Week.
Lower Parliament Hall
On South Street, next to St Mary's Quad: briefly the site of the Scottish Parliament.
Occasionally our debates are in alternative venues.
Speakers
We host a wide variety of speakers - politicians, academics, competitive debaters - from all over the world.
Participation
Attendees are not expected to speak!
However, there is an opportunity for floor speeches where those who wish to contribute to the debate can.

Our Public Events Philosophy
Founded in 1794, the UDS is the oldest (and some might say finest) of its kind.
A student society that relies on the dedication of its volunteers, we pride ourselves on debating political, historical, and contemporary subjects. We strive to invite experts in their subjects to come and share in the spirit of our motto: “For Friendship and Learning”.
St Andrews remains the only university in the UK to offer free, weekly, public debates; a fact that we are very proud of.
Attending Public Events
We are so excited to have you join us at our public events! Alongside a space for sharing and exchanging knowledge, the UDS is a place for friendship—everyone is warmly welcome! As a subcommittee of the Union, every matriculated student is automatically a member of the UDS.
We love a bit of tradition—you are also very welcome to wear your red gown, and if you don't already have one, you can borrow one from us.
At most events there is an opportunity for floor speeches or questions - so feel free to break out a pen and paper!
You must produce your student matriculation card to gain free entry to all of our public events.
Floor Speeches
If you are a member of the audience and have interesting thoughts you'd like to share with your fellow viewers and the speakers during the Debate, you are encouraged to give a floor speech!
You will have up to two minutes for your speech, and if your speech is particularly stimulating, you could win a £15 voucher.
Floor Speeches and any audience participation is entirely voluntary!
Single Speaker Events
Alongside our weekly Public Debates, we welcome interesting and high-profile speakers to give talks to students on a less regular basis throughout the academic year. The topic is based on the speaker's interests, and students will have the possibility to interact closely with them following a Q&A.
These events will be advertised in our weekly email and on Social Media when we have one organised.
